BarkleyCharles Barkley rips his alma mater Auburn for not hiring Turner Gill as the schools football coach.  Auburn chose their former 2004 defensive coordinator who left Auburn to become Iowa State Cyclones football coach and since then has compiled a 5–19 record.

Turner Gill is who is black happens to be the head coach of Turner gillBuffalo.  Buffalo might not be on the list of powerhouse schools, but Turner has turned that program around in three years.  Prior to Gill taken over Buffalo had won only 10 games in their first seven seasons at the Division I-A level.  Buffalo won their division this year with an 8–5 record.

Barkley is quoted as saying

"I think race was the No. 1 factor," said Barkley, who played basketball for three seasons at Auburn during the early 1980s. "You can say it's not about race, but you can't compare the two resumes and say [Chizik] deserved the job. Out of all the coaches they interviewed, Chizik probably had the worst resume."  (espn.com)

The problem is that that are less than a handful of black college coaches in Division One football.  The elite programs have rarely took that bold initiative and hired a black coach to run its program.  Ty Willinghan did at Notre Dame, he had marginal success according to Notre Dame standards (I guess that is why he was ran away). Look at the Fightin’ Irish now.

I would love to see Turner Gill go back to his alma mater Nebraska and bring the Cornhuskers back to prominence.  My buddy who is a die “Big Red” fan would love to see that happen and so would the people in Lincoln.
